Time for a Fiscal Checkup

Give your financial records a good “going over.” In the process you might streamline your financial life and free up some valuable time to apply to your home business.

What are your goals, your needs and your desires for a better future? What can you do to make your life more prosperous? There are many ways to achieve your goals – one way might be to start a home business.

Now is the time for that fiscal checkup. Give your financial records a good “going over.” In the process you might streamline your financial life and free up some valuable time to apply to your home business.

  • Reassess your investment portfolio. Weed out the poor performers and eliminate overlapping funds that under perform. Diversify your portfolio – include stocks, bonds and real estate in the mix, this will reduce the volatility of your returns.
  • Update your insurance, estate planning and wills. Be sure you have enough coverage to handle the mortgage payments if anything should happen to you or your spouse. Consider setting up a trust, regardless of the level of your assets. Maintain and continually update these items as things in your home business life change. This will make your financial transitions smoother.
  • Live within your means. This may sound hard to do since you’ve chosen to run a home business. You need to make a plan to pay off all credit card debt. A good way to do that is by consolidating your debt and paying it off with a lower interest loan. If you have enough equity in your home, it may be wise to take the equity to reduce your debt and then write-off the interest on your taxes. Cut costs by paying cash for what you need. Review your cellular phone plans, landlines, cable bills and subscriptions. Cut out the fat.
  • Create a savings plan. You should have a three to six month cushion of living expenses tucked away. Consider using savings bonds or CD’s.
  • Maximize your home business earnings. You can increase or decrease your income potential by accelerating your billings or deferring your expenses. As a home business owner don’t forget the special bonuses to small business owners allowed in section 179 of the tax code.

And as always, consult your personal financial consultant for the best way to apply these tips to your specific home business situation.
